Year 7 Debating and Public Speaking Update

The Year 7 Boys commenced their elective subject: Debating and Public Speaking. They learned and had plenty of fun while doing so.

The focus for Term 1 was introduction to the Public Speaking and some basics of communication. Particularly they acquired knowledge about the importance of body language e.g., eye contact, movement, hand gestures, facial expressions, communicating through voice- projection, pace, pitch, stress, volume, tone, register and lastly how to organize ideas in a persuasive speech.

During the last 2 weeks of the term, they presented their imaginary product during the “Shark Tank Activity”, during which they enjoyed both performing and spectating amazing persuasive speeches.

Study Routines for VCE

This year is your last year. You will NOT have a second chance to do it again or change your subject should you fail it or not like it. That means you have to put all you have into this last chance: your time, your focus, your efforts, and most importantly, your attitude. Don’t study U34 of any subjects like you did in U12. Start working hard NOW. Don’t wait until when being laid back has been internalized into a habit to cram the content of the whole year into a month before the final exam. Change your study routine, change how you organize your study desk at home, put your phones away when studying. Do whatever you can to maximize your focus and minimize distraction.

Candide

It’s early days in the auditorium where the school production of Candide is rehearsing, but the voices are ringing out loud and clear.

“This is the best of all possible worlds,” say the cast with burning conviction, but one of the first things you notice is how young they actually are. Bursting with passion, yes, but the majority of the cast are under 15 years of age.

“Candide is a great character to play” said one of the students “he has a lot of conflict in his personality especially at the end of the show. I really enjoy it because he is so naïve, like a clown so I get to work on my comedic ability.”

This play is an absurdist comedy based on a modern version of the Voltaire classic. As a director I need to be able to build the student’s comedic timing and slapstick ability. We have a lot of challenges to face with a cast that has very little experience, most did not even know they could act or sing, but from the very first scene, we want to say to the audience, expect the unexpected!

Performance dates to be announced. Tickets on sale soon.
